Swirly Line Storm

Today for cybersmart we were getting a taste of the summer learning journey. This was a task we tried.  The original art was by Mohammed Melini and the art is called 'Composition'. I chose the first green colours to join together and the yellow to kind off join. I choose to make the outside lines dark blue to hold together the lighter colours in the centre.

Jet Boating Collage

What did you do in the holidays?  I went jet boating in Taupo at the Huka Falls. It was fast and adrenaline rushing. We spun and nearly hit objects many times. The Huka Falls had so much water flowing out of it but we were told that it didnt have much flowing out. I created a collage to demonstrate my experience. I removed background on a few images and included a trout jumping. The water fall in this picture is the Huka Falls. Beautiful isn't it?

Bill Billy Bob

This is my crazy animal collage. We were given the fun task of creating a fun animal or creature from other parts of animals. As you can see mine consists of many different animals. This lead on to creative writing about your creature. Digital skills we had to use were, remove background, cropping into shapes and screen castifiy to record my voice. I even gave mine a name. Bill Billy Bob. I enjoyed finding fun images and texture and making them into shapes. My clouds are red velvet and my dino spikes are made from a green scale texture. I really enjoyed doing this task because it was different and you could have free rein over what you created.

Build A Brand We Video

Today we were learning how to create a jingle that builds a brand. We used We Video, which is an awesome tool to showcase your learning. I have used we video before and I didint know you could animate and do so much things to enhance your videos. My video is of a remove the background selfie of me, with texts coming in at different times. My texts say how to draw a horse and Sophias Super Stuff. My jingle includes music and a narrate of Me and Rylee. I enjoyed creating a jingle because you had a fair amount of free rein over what you made it about. I would love to create another jingle.

DIY Masks

For the last two sesions of sewing tech, we have been creating masks. One of our kind teachers gave us some awesome material, with detail pictures of deer, goats, stags, trout and more. I choose a material with goats on rocks. It was a reasonably simple process. The hardest thing was making the pleating. Pleating is the folds on the front. We had to pin them, then iron and sew. The best skill that I've learnt was probably pleating, but I've learnt lots of other tips and tricks. This term in sewing has been a blast. I even learnt to make pants. They are quite big on me but at least they will fit me for a long time. Since I am a year eight, this is my very final tec session with sewing. Thanks Anne for teaching me sewing skills that will last a life time. Here is my mask.

If I Were A Volcano

For poem of the week last week we had a poem called 'If I Were A Storm' By Katie Bloom. It was a poem about if she was a storm and what she would do. The piece had parts of personification and very descriptive parts. We decided to put our own twist on this writing. We have been studying volcanoes and how our earth works. So we created our own decriptive pice of writing called 'If I Were A Volcano'. Here is my piece of writing...

If I Were A Volcano

If I were a volcano,
I would tower above rolling hills, forests, valleys, seas and cities.
I would sit in silence, waiting and watching, for the perfect time to strike.
Suddenly. When it's least expected I would groan and bubble, puff and smog.
My body would tremble with rage and fury.
Smoke would escape out my ears with pace.
I would suddenly toss and hurl my hot rocks, kilometres through the bleak air.
Burying deep into pulpy earth.
I would be fuming with exhaust and flaming lava would hunt you down.
Slowly I'd soon settle, but rocks would pounce if you get too close.
I would be miserable as my blistering, orange, lava dress  slowly diminishes.
I would stand proud and staunch as the world admires my harmful actions.
When suddenly a drowsy, somnolent feeling hits me.
For once in my life, a calm tempered ease fills my body.
My eyes fall shut.

Music Creation

During Cybersmart we have been working on music creations. We have been using an app called sound trap. You can use this app for a thirty day trial for free and make and create or use others music. Famous music artists use this free app and it is reasonably easy to navigate when you get the hang of it. We were trying to make mood in music. I chose a photo of a lion and tried to create music that goes with the photo. I think I could have done better but I tried. Here is my creation.

5 Reasons Why Horses And Ponies Are The Best Animals

Since we have been focusing on persuasive writing, we did a small peice on 5 reasons why. I choose why horses and ponies are the best pets because I am very familiar with that. I hope that this peice of writing can make you think the same.

Zoo Art

To go with my persuasive writing I drew a cartoon picture of a lion. I did not trace this. I searched up a photo of a cartoon lion and started drawing. I am very proud of my picture because I have never drawn something this artistic. I went around the outline with a black pen to sharpen up the edges. There are a few little mistakes that you can really see looking closley, but they are not very noticable from further away. I tried to add a sun set and the savannah in the background. I am proud of my lion art. Do you think zoos should be banned? Here is a picture of it.

Beaming Bright Beanies

Beaming Bright Beanies

Today in sewing tech, we have been given the task to create 17 fluro beanies for our skiing camp this term. One for each kid in room 4. Today there was a lot of cutting rather than sewing, but that is the start of the process. We are making multi coloured beanies so that we wont get lost at the MT Ruapahu and the teachers wont have any issues finding us. It was quite a job cutting the many shapes out. At the end I got a hand cramp and a sore back. The material was a windbreaking one so it should help keep our heads out of the wind.  Our next steps will be pinning the peices together and sewing them to create a beanie. Hopefully we won't get lost in the snow. I am quite sure we won't with the overly bright colours as they really hurt the eyes.

Fungi Life Cycle

I created this poster to try and show in a creative way, the life cycle of a fungi. The small ball that is in the dirt is a spore. It lands in the dirt and  grows a small thread. The small thread turns into a mass of hyphae called Mycelium. The fruiting body sprouts, the mushroom matures and releases its own spores into the wind to grow more fungi. This is my poster that I created from Google Drawings. To create the hyphae I used the tool curve. Curve is great to draw things and then add colour into them. Here is my poster.

Printmaking

Today I finished my first real print for my printmaking. I am so exited because this was my first real one. I wanted to do yellow on blue for my first colour. The process of printing it is simple. You roll on the ink. Not too much, only about a blob as big as your fingernail. After that you carefully flip it and place it on your paper. Grab a dry roller and roll it for 10 seconds or so. Try to keep it in the same place. Carefully pick it up with out smugging. Done. Let your print dry and wash the ink off the lino. Here is my first real print.

Decade of Music

Adding to our topic of 'Changing Times' we choose three question about changing times. I choose to study how music changes. These are my three questions. How has music evolved over time? Why has music changed? Then taking a look at singers and music videos throught the years. The questions helped me stay on track and not change topic all of a sudden. My thoughts on how music has changed is that, personally that old music sound better. New music is more modern and older music does have an organic feel. Some mordern songs are nice though. Whats your preference on how music has changed? Here is my work.

Music

Here is another one of my music creations. This is on chrome lab, the monkey app. The video is cool because the monkey plays the drums and the dinger thing. I loved creating this. This sound like a heart beat. Here is mine.

Incedibox

Today in cybersmart we were learning how to create music. This was my favourite app to use. Its called Incredibox. You should check it out, it is very fun adding different sounds to the people. This is my first hit. I am proud of this hit because I will actually use this for something oneday. The hardest part was finding another sound for my last person because i felt that it was missing something. Listen To my Incredibox Mix here

Printmaking

This term our maths focus is printmaking. We used the stencil process. Printmaking is an artistic way of printing a photo  on to a texture. We created a simple photo that we then sketched and copied four times. We then copied that onto our picec of nuetral coloured lino by placing the sketch onto the lino and pressing hard with the pen. Then we went over it a few times to really get the ink on it. Went in with the lino cutters to cut out parts of the lino that we no longer need. I am still up to this process. I will show the finished product when  finished. Here is my work so far.

Fungi Slow Writing

                                                    Fungi Slow Writing

To add to our journey learning about fungi, we decided to try slow writing about a type of fungi. We each picked a photo of a fungi that some students took around our school. There was a variety and most photos were different. I choose a picture that I thought to be Velvet Foot. Then we created sentences using the instrutions that we were given. The first setence used a question. Mine was Where does this colourful treasure call home? Then we created similies and metaphors. I enjoyed this writing because it allowed us to use imagination.
Here is my writing.

How Yeast Works GIF

Today for cybersmart we created a GIF. To link with our fungi inquiry we made a GIF on how yeast works. We based this off our experiment with a balloon on a bottle using different temperatures of water, to see how yeast reacts. The temperatures we used were 13 degrees, 32 degrees, 39 degrees and 51 degrees. We used slides to create the first part of the GIF's. Like the start of an animation, using 15 slides as the max. Then we used 'tall tweets' to transform the slides into a GIF. I enjoyed making a GIF. My GIF show how to make the yeast mixture then how it reacts. To see an extra realistic GIF visit Hayleys Blog.
Here is my first ever GIF.

Reading Picture Books

We had to make an online picture book for the younger students of our school. I used screen castifiy and read 'I love animals', by 'Flora Mcdonnell'. I choose this book as it appealed to me, because I love animals. I also thought that the book had lots of pictures and not to much writing so it was ideal.  It was fun and hard to not make mistakes, but at the end of the day I decided that if I said the wrong word or got something wrong, to just continue and act like that didn't happen. This is my online book.

Street Art

This week we had a poem about my street. It was about the diverese houses and describing his street. We did some discussing and thought about it. We decided that some of the words like 'bay'. Were a coastal town in NZ. Then our next task was to draw a picture of this street. We added bright water colours and pencils. We added power lines and clothes lines. Hayley did an amazing piece. She added water colour and it was 3d, like a beautiful villa. Here is my art.

Thursday

Today we  read about the first Chinease migraters who went from country to another for gold rushes. We had a parner. Mine was Liana. We took notes while the other read. Then together we rewrote the 8 paragraph only using key main points. It was hard and challenging. I enjoyed recrafting the writing, and would love to do it again.

Animal Action Animation

Today for cybersmart we created animations. We used slides. But this time we added audio. This is a new feature of slides. My story for my animation was a cat and a horse were walking towards each other. Then the sat jumped on the horse and the horse didn't like it. I enjoy doing animations.  I will update my blog with the animaion soon. The next step is to add it to my blog with the audio. We just had some technical diffuculties.

Bubble Moments

My best Bubble Moments
I have created a cool google drawing about my best bubble moments during lockdown. The little circle are the bubbles. I tried to add borders and lots of colours. It is a nice way of presenting a reflection.

Genious Hour Novel

I have recently started a new genious hour on a novel. I am writing a novel. Its called the Forever Pony. Its based on how I got my pony Gingernut and how I felt. Here is the starting 2 chapters.

The news I Had Been Waiting For

I snuggled into bed wondering what will he look like, how will he act, what's his name? I had just been told that I could get my very own pony. We were going to pick him up in 1 week. Every day I counted down the days and hours until I could meet him and take him down to be my very own. I had been waiting for this moment for ages. It felt like forever. I wish I knew more about him. I was very curious because I had never had a pet that was mine. All I knew was that he was a boy and he was around my height. I wanted to know more. But I was going to have to wait till tomorrow. Which was like waiting till next year.

The Day
I woke up to the sun beaming through my window. Usually when I wake up Im feeling tired. But I had been waiting for this day for as long as I could remember. I was pumped. LOoking out the window in the car, wishing I was the one driving. But then again if I was driving, we would all be dead. We turned up the old windy road, deciding what house it was. Finally we turned into what we thought was the house. The house that I was going to collect my future best friend. We pulled up and parked. I leaped out of the car and ran to the paddock. I climbed the gate and ran to the pony. He tickled me with his warm breath and long whiskers. He licked my fingers and nuzzled me. He was perfect.

First Ride
His previous life was as acarting pony so I had a bit of work to do with him. He had only been ridden a few times with a saddle. Nerves grew, but so did excitement, as it was my first ever ride on him.

A Lazy Bees Life In Lockdown

One of my activities today was to create an animation. It not great but it was a bit of work. It is created on google slides. You just move the shapes and characters with your keys and duplicate the slide for every new move. Its easy but it does come with challenges. I found it hard to find png of cartoon bees.  It is a fun thing to do if you have any spare time to kill.

Do It Yourself Cat Hammock

It was rainy yesterday, very hard. So after a long hard search through Pinterest I saw a cat hammock. My chair in my room didn't have 2 stretchers so it was a little difficult. But I patched it up with string.

What you need
An old shirt
Scissors
A chair ideally with 2 stretchers
A cat

Starting at the bottom of the shirt, cut up 10 - 15 cm on each side. Cut the shoulders in half for tying. Tie on the chair legs on all 4 corners. Done, place your cat in the hammock. My cats love this. Since my instructions are not very clear. Here is a video to support them.

Decade Box

Our study this term is decade and how things have changed over the years. I have done interviews with my parents or grandparents and now I have made a decade box. A decade box is something that you add things to over time so that others in around 100 years can observe and learn things about you. Corona virus is a perfect example of things you could I got an old show box and put paper around it. Then painted tea and coffee over it to make it older. I have been adding one or so things to it most days. Here is is what I've added so far. A stick with a small pine cone, a hydrangea, a list of things I've been up to, some words out of the paper ( covid, home school. ).

80 s Interveiw

I interviewed my Mum as part of our decade study at school. I asked questions about her life in the 80s when she was my age and growing up. I asked things such as sport, music, dance, pets, meals, technology. I think that technology and style have changed the most because now you can do literally anything on a device. But other than that I think that my life is nearly simarlar to hers growing up. Here they are.

Invention Test

Since we don't go to school so we can't have tech, we get assingned a recipe to do if we want to. This week was an invention test. We had to use at least two. We worked with eggs, cheese, fruit, chocolate. I decided to use eggs and chocolate. I made meringue and got through a lot of rotton eggs. I spread the meringue onto a tray and then chopped it into cracker like shapes and covered in chocolate. I was intentionally trying to make chocolate berry meringues but some things changed. I had a few egg yolks to left to make something with so I made an old fashioned vanilla slice/custard square.

Here is the recipe.

Meringue crackers chocolate things

4 eggs, seperated
1 cup of sugar
1 teaspoon of cream of tartar
2 table spoons of coconut oil
1/2 cup of chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 180 degrees
Beat the 4 egg yolks until frothy and bubbly
Gradually add the sugar and cream of tartar, slowly about tablespoon by tablespoon every 30 seconds
Keep beating for the next 4 - 7 minutes or until stiff peaks form
Spread the meringue mix on the baking tray to shape around a 30 cm by 30 cm square
Place into oven for 10 - 15 minutes
Cool if they look brown it doesn't matter it will add to the taste
Cut into 5 to 10 cm pieces
Melt the coconut oil in microwave add chocolate chips for around 15 seconds
stir till smooth and pour over meringue, let cool.
ENJOY!!

Random Words

This was one of my activities today. It was to write several sentences from random words. You can choose any word you want of get someone to choose between 1 and how many pages in your book. Then choose between 1 and 24 to get the line, then 1 and 10 to get the word.

One of our class novels is 'The Boy Who Harnessed' so I decided to choose a word from that. I have chosen 'misala'. The meaning is 'go crazy'. Here is my sentences.

Spiders were flooding out of the sky, landing, taking over the world, maybe. I began to think I was misala. My worst fear, all over my lawn.

Slightly charred and ripe. Juicy dowe dripping from my mouth, licking up every last bit.

Anzac Day Acrostic

Amid gunshots, deafening, scarring, making me freeze in horror.

Nightmares of death awaiting me filling my head with fright.

Zipping bullets, firing out the machine gun, taking Turkish lives.
Atmosphere filled with pollution, smoke and bullets.

Cannons bursting my ear drums, making me jump with pain.
Dads, sons, brothers, husbands all lying in their own blood,
could that be me next? I think to myself, will I ever see my family again?
Aching feet from life in the trenches.
Muddy cold, sore, never dry and worn as I get off the boat one last time,
this time I am going home.
Yesterday I was taking others lives,
now I am reuniting with the ones that make my life important.

Novel Study

                                 Peekay

I have been doing a novel study in my reading group. I choose to create a wordle with one of the characters as an activity. Peekay is the main character in ' The Power Of One'. So I decided to do him. I have been really enjoying this book so far, I am at chapter 5,  when I have finished it I will do a book report.

Poppies

Recently I made with my family some poppies. We used black pipe cleaners, scrap red card and a red reusable warehouse bag. We cut a variety of circles and threaded the pipe cleaner to try resemble the poppies shape. I think they ended up beautiful because their are such a diverse range of them. Big or small. Then we presented them in vase. They look great.

Gnocchi And Rich Garlic Tomato Sauce

Gnocchi is an Italian dish dish also known as 'potato pasta'. I was watching 'Nadia's Comfort Kitchen' ( a quarantine special ) the other day. I saw her making this dish. It just looked moth watering so I didn't hold back and the next day made this for My family and I 's dinner. I've gotta say it was delicious. Here is the recipe. ( Makes enough for a hungry family of five )

Ingredients

Gnocchi
4  large potatoes, not the small boiling ones, the big baking spuds cleaned with skins on.
1 egg
About 3 - 4 cups of flour
Large pasta pot
salt
water

Sauce
2 cans of tinned tomatoes, don't recommend using the mexican style, very hot.
3 cloves of garlic or 2 teaspoons of crushed, what ever you have on hand.
Salt and pepper to taste

Preheat your oven to 180 degrees
Place the cleaned spuds on the tray and place into oven for 50 minutes or until very tender. Stick a knife through them to test.

Cut the warm potatoes in half and squeeze the mash out of the skins into into a seive over a bowl. Don't chuck those skins away. You can bake them in a tray for about 10 minutes in a bit of oil and salt to make potato skin chips. You don't want to be handing hot potatoes so wait till they are cooled down, but they have to be warm not cold.
Push the potato through the seive to make it as fluffy as possible. Add in to egg mixing fast to not cook the egg. I gave up after a while because it was so tedious, but If you are patient enough probably a good idea to do this step.
Sift the flour cup by cup and mixing with you hands until it reaches a dough like form. Then roll into 30 cm worm like rolls about 2 to 3 cm wide. Cut with a knife into bite size pieces. They now will look like squares. Start by boiling the water in the pot. Salt the water up like you do to cook pasta. Cook for around 20 minutes till they feel similar to pasta.

While the Gnocchi are cooking start the sauce. Add 3 tables spoons of oil to a hot pan. I know it sounds like heaps but you need it. Then add the tomatoes and finely cut garlic. Add some seasoning herbs, salt, pepper. You can be very flexible with this sauce adding gherkins, salami, broccoli, parsley, basil, ect. Simmer of a medium heat for at least 10 minutes.

When both things are cooked strain the gnocchi and mix the sauce with it. Add some cheese on top with salt, pepper, parsley anything you want.

Enjoy.

Rain Guage

For maths I made a really easy rain Guage.
It is a great fun maths activity which anyone can make. You only need a plastic bottle and a pair of scissors.
First cut the top about 1 / 4 of the way down.
Face the lid facing down into the bottle so the top is a wide brim so rain will easily fall into the bottle.
This rain gauge offers great maths, so now I can make tables of how much rain I will get in a week. Another thing I considered was how much wind we get at my house. The rain gauge would definitely blow away. So I shoved some rocks into the bottle to hold it down. To mesure the rain you will tip it into a mesuring cup. I cant wait until next week to measure my rain. Here's my work.

School Tryathlon

This year my maths group were given the task to create a tryathlon for the school to complete after our annual swimming sports. We had to mesure the courses that we were making up as we went. We did a few loops around the streets which equaled to a 2.7km bike. A 1.05km run and a 48m swim. We had to work out the transitions and how everything would work it was tricky but very fun. My favourite was the bike because I love biking. Here is the slides that we made to plan out the tryathlon.

Blog Post Statistics

Today we were comparing how many blog posts we have done in 2020 and 2019. We created charts to showcase our data, on google sheets. It was fun creating the chart, adding colours and fonts and observing how many we have done. We did a chart on our own blog posts and a class on together. Hayley recently did the summer learning journey, and she is very self managed at home, so if you are wondering why she is above the rest of us, thats why. I only have five this year because the year has only started. Where as Hayley already has 51, 46 more than me. Hohepa and I both did the same number of blog posts as me in 2019, 21. They either have more or less than me. Last year in 2019 the first 4 months I didnt blog, because I must of being doing other school work.
Here is my graph.

Awesome Ambrosia

Recently in cooking tech we created an ice cream flavour with a partner. My partner and I created ambrosia ice cream. That was a great flavour because we both like ambrosia. The ice cream mixture turned out like a huge bowl of ambrosia. The challenge was to be creative, but to add one fresh element. So since it was ambrosia we added berries. We boiled strawberries, wineberries and black berries until they were a puree consistentsy. Then we added the marshmallows and chocolate chunks. Then we made an a poster to advertise and present our ice cream. Ice cream is so easy to make, 3 eggs, boiling water, cream, sugar, things to create your flavour and a whole lot of arm work. I loved this experience, and would love to make ice cream again. https://www.postermywall.com/index.php/posterbuilder

Pepeha 2020

Today we used Tour builder and screencastifiy to create a video about our pepeha. we included our school, iwi, awa, maunga, ahou and back to our school again. I found it fun adding icons and finding places that mean alot to me on google maps. Tour builder is a great tool to explain a story or where you have been.

Here is my work.

Sunflowers

We gazed at the sunflowers standing tall and proud infront of the fence. Tall and short, there was such  a diveresty of them, just like humans. Taking in their colours and textures. Recreating them, adding paint, crayon, and water colour. Adding textures to make them look as lifelike as you could. Heres mines.

Profile 2020

Hi my name is Sophia I live in Matawai and go to Matawai School as a year 8. I live on a sheep and beef Farm with my parents and my brother. I enjoy being outdoors with my pets, riding bikes and horses.  I love playing hockey and I love swimming.

My favourite thing to do at school is read. So far my favourite book series are 'Harry Potter' and 'The Hunger Games'.  I enjoy maths and feel like I am getting better at it. I am really nervous, because at the end of this year I am going to boarding school. My goal for this year is to get through a tonne of books.

I am looking forward to the Easter holidays to go to Lake Rotoiti, a special place we go to stay in our caravan, to fish and go skiing. I really hope calves are allowed to go to pets day this year because I am going to rear some. I am going to rear lambs again this year before I go to high school. As you can see I love animals, because they always bring out the best in me.

Twist On Classic Chocolate Cake

Peanut Butter and Popcorn Chocolate Cake

A twist on my favourite type of cake, brave move in my opinion. I looked at this recipe side ways at first. But after trying it, changed my mind. If the popcorn doesn't sound appetising, try the peanut butter. You can use this chocolate cake recipe or if you have your own special one feel free to use that. It's really the icing that ties it together.
